Laurie May

Mparntwe based spoken word poet, Laurie May presented her original poem Born of Salt Water live at the Unbroken Land 2020-2021 screening of short films. Working with Laurie was a long held goal of Incite Arts. Laurie’s poem looked at the role water has played throughout her life and travels.

Born in the small town of Weipa in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Laurie followed the coastline until the desert called her to Alice Springs about 10 years ago. With Aboriginal ancestry from Central Queensland from her father and New Zealand heritage from her ma they have the saltwater, the red dirt and long white cloud in their veins.
